The Future Is Here! But It Sounds Like Yesterday.

future banner 2

So, you know the Future right?

It’s a prefix that’s been heavily employed over the past year or so. There’s “Future Bass”, “Future Soul”, “Future Garage”, “Future Funk” and plain old “Future”. Sometimes it also gets called “Chill Trap” depending on who’s selling it to you. Chief exponents (for me) would be Mr Carmack, Troyboi, Just A Gent, Grant Bowtie, Hegemon and YK. There are loads more and I’m sure I’m missing someone important, so I’m sorry if your reading this and thinking, hey, what about me?

Now, as much as I like (what I perceive to be the style of) Future, I’m not quite so sure it’s really a new genre. I think I see it’s current form borne of the work of Hudson Mohawke, Daft Punk and producers like  Flosstradamus. But, you could go back further with the influence of Timbaland with his double time fills and minor chords. In fact there also S.O.S. Band type 70’s Jazz Funk in there too as well as the whole influence of practically all dance music since the birth of modern electronic music in the 80’s. So House, Garage, Hip Hop, Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Broken Beat, Detoit Techno, Euro Hardfloor, Dirty South and later Genre’s like Juke and Footwork are all represented here. It’s influence is the culmination of 30 years or so of great dance music.

It is also interesting how the music is presented, with blog behemoths like EDM.com and Thissongissick.com being the main pushers and more or less controlling what’s up and what’s not. So it ain’t new and if it really is the future, then we shouldn’t have heard it yet, surely? Wouldn’t time fold in on it’s self or something equally disastrous. It’s a paradox!

To me, Fuse by Hudson Mohawke from five years ago, sort of provides the blueprint for Future Bass:

Club Popozuda Mixtape #37 – Nedu Lopes

cp 37 NEDU banner large

Oi Globalistas!

This edition of our mixtape series comes from one of Brazil’s busiest DJs, Nedu Lopes. Nedu was introduced to us by our good buddy, Funk na Caixa’s Renato M2, so many thanks to him for that. Nedu’s laying down a Trap map in this tape, with a dose of Miami Bass nastiness, which as you know was the original template for early Baile Funk. To find out more about Nedu check out his website at: nedulopes.com

New Release: Rafael Aragon & Tropikore

DOUBLE A 2 RA banC

Yes Globalistas!

Today sees the release of our 2nd “Double A” and the man responsible is none other than Parisian beat juggler Rafael Aragon. Just like Global Bass, Rafael is a blend of Latino and Arabic and this cocktail of influence has been reflected in his music. This one reaches even further east, exploring the sounds of Asia, taking you on a steamy journey through the soundscape of Bhangra verses Moombahton, or “Bhangraton” as Rafael calls it. Raf also teams up on “Punjabi Bhangra” with Venezuela’s excellent Global Bass producer Tropikore. For more Tropikore freshness, just click on his name.

As well as this release, Rafael has even knocked up a Bhangraton mixtape for you to enjoy. So, download the EP on us and be sure to check out Raf’s mixtape. Beleza…

Dopeness In The House: Symbiz iz Back!

SYMBIZ-LOGO-TAG_small300dpi

Ahoy DITH fans!

The German bruderschaft that is Symbiz return with their Thursday giveaway feature. This time in association with Soulforce Records. The boys have stuck to their ragga roots on this one, however it’s much more Global Bass than their usual Dubstepish Dancehall flavour, incorporating Twerk vibes and Moombahton beats. I’m looking forward to Thursdays!

Club Popozuda Mixtape #36: Golden Kong

cp 36 Golden Kong banner

Oi Globalistas!

Our growing collection of mixtapes from our fave Global Bass DJs from around the world continues with Paulista, Golden Kong. For a while in Brazil, music has been quite an insular affair, with most music being heard being native to Brazil. So where everybody else has assimilated Brazilian underground bass music, the traffic was generally one way. But in the last year or so we’ve seen a raft of young producers really embracing the idea of Global Bass. These include Asshake, Dorly, Leo Justi and today’s mixtape provider, Golden Kong. As always, we asked GK to tell us a little about himself and this is what he said:

Golden Kong is the codename of Fernando Simões, half of EDM duo, Arcade Fighters, he comes with a new ideal of blending many styles of electronic music.
His productions and sets show the inspiration obtained from various parts of the world, with a lot of bass and broken beats infecting everyone with the swing of their sound.
